In Hollywood, they have been epitomized by the now defunct Demi and Ashton couple. On TV, it was known as the cougar invasion. Traditionally, the well-known term is the May-December affair.
Older woman dating younger men has now transcended from its previous position of being ostracized (a.k.a. the sugar mommy) to a more mainstream dating occurrence. With society being more accepting of different trends, how are people really taking this romance?
Can it really work?
Age-old tradition has dictated dating couples to either be of the same age or for the man to be the older one in the relationship. This stems from stereotypes of men assuming the role of caretaker, successful breadwinner, and solid foundation of the future family
However, more women of the older generation are considering the change—and with good reason. From a biological perspective, this kind of relationship actually makes logical sense. Consider the biological facts: guys hit their prime in their late teenage years while women are more sexually adept past their 30s.
So when the when it comes to older women dating younger men, guys in their 20s are technically perfectly matched with women in their 40s.
His view on the May-December relationship
From the perspective of guys, however, what do they really think about these kinds of relationships? For some guys, older women are actually a refreshing change from dating younger women who are always conscious about their looks.
Most young women are more insecure with their body types, their diets, their exercise, and their dress sizes. On the flip side, the older women are more comfortable in their skins because they are living in the moment. They are past the real worrying—save for the occasional Botox treatment perhaps—because they just want to have fun with the right person.
In addition, men may find a mature woman to be more interesting because they are generally more experimental, conversationalist, experienced in all sense of the word, and most of all, more sexually adept.
Reasons why women are opting for this
Within Hollywood and in real-life couples, older women dating younger men are slowly becoming a trend, and one that is even supported by more people.
One reason for this is that more women are starting to look a lot younger for their age thanks to beauty enhancements, technologies, and dieting regimens. To some extent, 40s has become the new 20s in the dating scene and this is because most women can do so. And the advantage of older women is that not only do they have more experience with relationships, they also have the mythological allure of the older woman that most young men are attracted to.
Another reason is that the proverbial bachelor—older man who always has the perpetual bachelor pad and a new, albeit younger, girl latched onto his arm—has now found his counterpart in the bachelorette. Older women are finding themselves in the dating scene either because they are bouncing back from a divorce or they don’t want to settle down with the American dream.
Tips for the older woman in the dating scene
A very important tip to remember for older women who are out in the dating scene: know what you are looking for. If you are looking for someone who is mature, this does not always mean going for an older man.
There are 40-year-old men who can be as mature as a 17-year-old teenager while there are 25-year-old bachelors who are supposed to be partying all night but are instead enjoying quiet evenings reading or taking care of families. Nowadays, it’s not so easy to establish maturity in a person, and age is certainly no longer the determining factor.
This is why it is important for women to know their expectations of their partners so they can match them with those that they find in the dating scene. Determine if you are the type who’s looking for a more casual relationship or if you’re looking for a serious affair.
Remember, it’s okay to tell him what you want. It’s better to be open instead of building the relationship on the foundation of pretense so as to avoid unnecessary frustration or messy heartbreaks. While this talk doesn’t have to happen on the first date (or the second or even third), when you decide to discuss this with him, make sure that you are on the same page and stress the direction on which you want the relationship to take.
Lastly, for women who are still not convinced that older women dating younger men can work because of a few mishaps, remember that successful dating goes hand-in-hand with possible rejection. Don’t let a few of these let you down. If you know yourself and what you want, there’s no stopping you from getting it.
